In March, our client Alvaro, the general manager of a machinery company, needed to ship two 40GP containers from Wuhan, China, to the destination port. Alvaro's company frequently imports mechanical parts from China.

I suggested that the goods be transported by feeder vessel from Wuhan to Shanghai, and then by a larger vessel from Shanghai to New York. A client had ordered a batch of fabric from Zhejiang. After a disappointing experience with his previous freight forwarder, he turned to me.

Before the goods reached the port, the client needed to pay the ocean freight. However, he insisted that payment would only be made after the goods were inspected at his factory and found to be satisfactory. Having worked as a freight forwarder for 26 years, I’ve encountered all sorts of requests, some of which are quite unreasonable. If the client didn’t pay the freight, the daily container demurrage and storage fees could amount to $300. Although these fees are the client’s responsibility, I found the potential for unnecessary costs troubling. To avoid these additional fees, I agreed to let the client pay half of the freight upfront so that the goods could be picked up.

This booking process was extremely urgent. Client Alejandro confirmed the need for space on Friday, June 16th, around 4 PM, and required the SO (Shipping Order) that same day. By the time I received Alejandro’s booking, it was already 5 PM on Friday. Why Freight Rates Vary Greatly Between Different Forwarders on the Same Route
We’ve been in the international freight business for 26 years, and many of our operators have 7-8 years of experience. Often, our salespeople ask who the consignee is as soon as a booking is made. This is because some shipping companies accept individual consignees, while others don’t, and some don’t accept shipments to certain countries—things can get very complicated.

Developing New Services to Meet Clients’ Needs—Something Ordinary Freight Forwarders Can’t Do
Last year, we developed a compliant customs declaration service for cross-border e-commerce. These new international freight services have made our e-commerce export logistics process much smoother.

1. Currently, many e-commerce customs declarations are still made using the 0110 code, which isn’t suitable for e-commerce. E-commerce declarations should be made using codes 1039, 9610, 9710, or 9810.

2. The 0110 declaration method involves standard documents like packing lists, invoices, and contracts. However, e-commerce declarations require different documentation—namely, a detailed list.

3. Payment methods are another factor. In e-commerce, most transactions are CIF (Cost, Insurance, and Freight), meaning the e-commerce seller pays the freight. We input the real tracking numbers from Amazon or Temu into the customs declaration form. We send the detailed list to customs, not the packing list, invoice, or contract. We convert the list into codes and transmit it directly. This allows you to legitimately transfer foreign exchange to your company’s account, without going through a third-party platform.
